AI’s Influence Runs Deeper Than You Think — 2026 Gartner Strategic Predictions Explain Why

Executives know AI is disruptive, but the how is opaque

“AI is no longer a future-facing concept. It’s already embedded in the systems, decisions and strategies that shape business. Yet many leaders still underestimate how quickly and subtly these shifts are unfolding.

The Gartner top strategic predictions for 2026 and beyond spotlight the undercurrents of AI-driven transformation. First presented at Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo™ 2025, these predictions offer a forward-looking view of how AI is influencing business decisions, operations and strategy — and why leaders need a sharper lens to see what’s coming.”  (By Daryl Plummer | November 14, 2025)

AI infiltrates B2B procurement

Prediction: By 2028, 90% of B2B buying will be AI agent intermediated, pushing over $15 trillion of B2B spend through AI agent exchanges.

Procurement is being reprogrammed, not by policy but by invisible agents. Traditional search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per-click (PPC) will give way to agent engine optimization. Products will need to be machine-readable, and procurement will shift to efficient, autonomous machine-to-machine transactions.

A surge of lazy thinking

Prediction: Through 2026, atrophy of critical-thinking skills, due to GenAI use, will push 50% of global organizations to require “AI-free” skills assessments.

As automation accelerates, the ability to think independently and creatively will become both increasingly rare — and increasingly valuable.

The rise of digital nation state platforms

Prediction: By 2027, 35% of countries will be locked into region-specific AI platforms using proprietary contextual data.

Sovereign AI is no longer a concept — it’s a competitive lever. The lines between governments and vendors are blurring, and the implications stretch far beyond tech. Once locked in, getting out won’t be easy.

AI-driven decision automation risks catastrophic loss

Prediction: By the end of 2026, “death by AI” legal claims will exceed 2,000 due to insufficient AI risk guardrails.

Black box systems — AI models whose decision-making processes are opaque or difficult to interpret — can misfire, especially in high-stakes sectors like healthcare, finance and public safety. Explainability, ethical design and clean data will become non-negotiable.

PMI Leading AI driven business transformation

Apart from the persisting challenges of how to achieve transformation excellence and increase the maturity of enterprise project management functions to maximize success, there are AI specific questions11 we  are all engaged in  addressing: embedded bias, hallucinations, use of synthetic data, explainability, data privacy and cybersecurity — all of which have major implications for customers and employees. Not to mention the classic transformation challenge of culture change (PMI  research)

PMI PROMPT ENGINEERING AI

“In today’s rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence and natural language processing, project managers are increasingly turning to generative AI systems powered by large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Infinity, Gemini, and Claude to streamline workflows and enhance project outcomes. These models have the potential to revolutionize project management Tasks, from generating documentation to analyzing data and providing insights. However, to fully harness the power of these models, project managers must master the art of prompt engineering.” PMI.
